CULTIVATED BLOOD

Updated: May 12, 2023

With the donor blood derived induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), we are currently trying to produce a steady supply of cultivated blood that is suitable for blood transfusions. With some blood types, this process has already been successfully done in the lab. Currently, researchers in TRACER are experimenting with producing this cultivated blood on a large scale with the help of a bioreactor. Once enough upscaling of this production process has been achieved, there will be enough blood available for transfusion for people with rare blood types and blood diseases.
